    Studies of Connecticut Hardwoods: The Treatment of Advance Growth Arising as a Result of Thinnings and Shelterwood Cuttings

    The typical hardwood stand with which the silviculturist in Connecticut has to deal is even-aged in form. The causes which operated in the past to create stands of this character are thoroughly understood and do not require consideration in this study. That even-aged stands, particularly when densely stocked and composed of comparatively intolerant species, require thinning to develop the most vigorous individuals and to obtain maximum production, is an accepted principle of silviculture. The study separates logically into five parts: 1. A system of classification for the woody vegetation. 2. Amount, character, and distribution of the advance growth and of reproduction arising subsequent to the last cutting. 3. Growth in height of the various elements composing the young stand. 4. Conclusions as to the probable composition of the future stand and the relative value of the individuals which it will contain. 5. Treatment advised to improve the future stand

    Transport collaboratif d’une charge par deux robots humanoïdes

    La structure bipède des robots humanoïdes leur confère une grande agilité et la capacité de se déplacer dans des environnements encombrés qui ne sont pas accessibles à des robots à roues plus traditionnelles. Cette particularité fait en sorte que ce type de robot est le mieux adapté pour évoluer dans des environnements conçus pour et par l’homme. Cette grande agilité a toutefois un prix puisque les humanoïdes sont plus complexes à contrôler étant donné l’instabilité inhérente à la marche bipède. Dans ce projet de recherche, on s’intéresse au contrôle de robots humanoïdes dans le cadre de tâches très communes et intéressantes à reléguer aux robots, soit le transport d’objet. Le cas d’intérêt est le transport collaboratif d’une charge par deux humanoïdes étant donné que ça ne nécessite aucun outil externe et est ainsi applicable en toute circonstance. En premier lieu, un estimateur d’état applicable pour les robots humanoïdes de petite taille est proposé, permettant ainsi d’estimer les interactions entre le robot et son environnement. Ensuite, une stratégie de contrôle permettant à un humanoïde d’utiliser un chariot de transport pour déplacer un objet lourd est présentée. Finalement, le transport collaboratif par deux robots humanoïdes est abordé. Le système développé utilise un contrôleur externe qui planifie la trajectoire des robots et valide la stabilité des déplacements à l’aide d’un modèle dynamique simple du système basé sur des pendules inversés. Tous les algorithmes développés ont été validés et testés sur des robots humanoïdes NAO. Les résultats démontrent qu’il est possible de transporter un objet lourd sans modifier les composantes matérielles des robots, soit en utilisant un chariot ou bien en coopérant avec un autre robot. Les résultats obtenus pourraient s’avérer utiles dans certaines situations réelles telles que les tâches de manutention dans un domaine manufacturier ou bien le transport de blessé sur une civière

    Enhanced Endurance Performance by Periodization of CHO Intake: "sleep low" strategy

    Purpose: We investigated the effect of a chronic dietary periodization strategy on endurance performance in trained athletes. Methods: 21 triathletes (V[Combining Dot Above]O2max: 58.7 +/- 5.7 mL[middle dot]min-1[middle dot]kg-1) were divided into 2 groups: a "sleep-low" (SL, n = 11) and a control group (CON, n = 10) consumed the same daily carbohydrate (CHO) intake (6 g[middle dot]kg-1[middle dot]d-1) but with different timing over the day to manipulate CHO availability before and after training sessions. The "sleep low" strategy consisted of a 3-week training/diet intervention comprising three blocks of diet/exercise manipulations: 1) "train-high" interval training sessions (HIT) in the evening with high-CHO availability; 2) overnight CHO restriction ("sleeping-low"), and 3) "train-low" sessions with low endogenous and exogenous CHO availability. The CON group followed the same training program but with high CHO availability throughout training sessions (no CHO restriction overnight, training sessions with exogenous CHO provision). Results: There was a significant improvement in delta efficiency during submaximal cycling for SL versus CON (CON: +1.4 +/- 9.3 %, SL: +11 +/- 15 %, P<0.05). SL also improved supra-maximal cycling to exhaustion at 150% of peak aerobic power (CON: +1.63 +/- 12.4 %, SL: +12.5 +/- 19.0 %; P = 0.06) and 10 km running performance (CON: -0.10 +/- 2.03 %, SL: -2.9 +/- 2.15 %; P < 0.05). Fat mass was decreased in SL (CON: -2.6 +/- 7.4; SL: -8.5 +/- 7.4 %PRE, P < 0.01), but not lean mass (CON: -0.22 +/- 1.0; SL: -0.16 +/- 1.7 %PRE). Conclusion: Short-term periodization of dietary CHO availability around selected training sessions promoted significant improvements in submaximal cycling economy, as well as supra-maximal cycling capacity and 10 km running time in trained endurance athletes

    Acute Endurance Exercise Induces Nuclear p53 Abundance in Human Skeletal Muscle

    Purpose: The tumor suppressor protein p53 may have regulatory roles in exercise response-adaptation processes such as mitochondrial biogenesis and autophagy, although its cellular location largely governs its biological role. We investigated the subcellular localization of p53 and selected signaling targets in human skeletal muscle following a single bout of endurance exercise. Methods: Sixteen, untrained individuals were pair-matched for aerobic capacity (VO2peak) and allocated to either an exercise (EX, n = 8) or control (CON, n = 8) group. After a resting muscle biopsy, EX performed 60 min continuous cycling at ~70% of VO2peak during which time CON subjects rested. A further biopsy was obtained from both groups 3 h post-exercise (EX) or 4 h after the first biopsy (CON). Results: Nuclear p53 increased after 3 h recovery with EX only (~48%, p < 0.05) but was unchanged in the mitochondrial or cytoplasmic fractions in either group. Autophagy protein 5 (Atg-5) decreased in the mitochondrial protein fraction 3 h post-EX (~69%, P < 0.05) but remained unchanged in CON. There was an increase in cytoplasmic levels of the mitophagy marker PINK1 following 3 h of rest in CON only (~23%, P < 0.05). There were no changes in mitochondrial, nuclear, or cytoplasmic levels of PGC-1α post-exercise in either group. Conclusions: The selective increase in nuclear p53 abundance following endurance exercise suggests a potential pro-autophagy response to remove damaged proteins and organelles prior to initiating mitochondrial biogenesis and remodeling responses in untrained individuals

    Concurrent exercise training: do opposites distract?

    Specificity is a core principle of exercise training to promote the desired adaptations for maximising athletic performance. The principle of specificity of adaptation is underpinned by the volume, intensity, frequency and mode of contractile activity and is most evident when contrasting the divergent phenotypes that result after undertaking either prolonged endurance or resistance training. The molecular profiles that generate the adaptive response to different exercise modes have undergone intense scientific scrutiny. Given divergent exercise induces similar signalling and gene expression profiles in skeletal muscle of untrained or recreationally active individuals, what is currently unclear is how the specificity of the molecular response is modified by prior training history. The time course of adaptation and when ‘phenotype specificity’ occurs has important implications for exercise prescription. This context is essential when attempting to concomitantly develop resistance to fatigue (through endurance-based exercise) and increased muscle mass (through resistance-based exercise), typically termed ‘concurrent training’. Chronic training studies provide robust evidence that endurance exercise can attenuate muscle hypertrophy and strength but the mechanistic underpinning of this ‘interference’ effect with concurrent training is unknown. Moreover, despite the potential for several key regulators of muscle metabolism to explain an incompatibility in adaptation between endurance and resistance exercise, it now seems likely that multiple integrated, rather than isolated, effectors or processes generate the interference effect. Here we review studies of the molecular responses in skeletal muscle and evidence for the interference effect with concurrent training within the context of the specificity of training adaptation

    Micro-epidemiology of Plasmodium falciparum malaria: Is there any difference in transmission risk between neighbouring villages?

    BACKGROUND: Malaria control strategies are designed as a solution for either the whole region or the whole country and are assumed to suit every setting. There is a need to shift from this assumption because transmission may be different from one local setting to another. The aim of this study was to assess the risk of clinical malaria given the village of residence among under-five children in rural north-western Burkina Faso. METHODS: 867 children (6–59 months) were randomly selected from four sites. Interviewers visited the children weekly at home over a one-year period and tested them for fever. Children with fever were tested for malaria parasites. An episode of clinical malaria was defined as fever (axillary temperature ≥ 37.5°C) + parasites density ≥ 5,000 parasites/μl. Logistic regression was used to assess the risk of clinical malaria among children at a given site of residence. RESULTS: Children accumulated 758 person years (PYs). Overall, 597 episodes of clinical malaria were observed, giving an incidence rate of 0.79 per PY. The risk of clinical malaria varied amongst the four sites. Taking one village as reference the odds ratio for the other three sites ranged from 0.66; 95%CI: 0.44–0.98 to 1.49; 95%CI: 1.10–2.01. CONCLUSION: Malaria control strategies should be designed to fit the local context. The heterogeneity of transmission should be assessed at the district level to allow cost-effective resource allocation that gives priority to locations with high risk. Functional routine health information systems could provide the necessary data for context specific risk assessment

    Empirical vs Bayesian approach for estimating haplotypes from genotypes of unrelated individuals

    BACKGROUND: The completion of the HapMap project has stimulated further development of haplotype-based methodologies for disease associations. A key aspect of such development is the statistical inference of individual diplotypes from unphased genotypes. Several methodologies for inferring haplotypes have been developed, but they have not been evaluated extensively to determine which method not only performs well, but also can be easily incorporated in downstream haplotype-based association analyses. In this paper, we attempt to do so. Our evaluation was carried out by comparing the two leading Bayesian methods, implemented in PHASE and HAPLOTYPER, and the two leading empirical methods, implemented in PL-EM and HPlus. We used these methods to analyze real data, namely the dense genotypes on X-chromosome of 30 European and 30 African trios provided by the International HapMap Project, and simulated genotype data. Our conclusions are based on these analyses. RESULTS: All programs performed very well on X-chromosome data, with an average similarity index of 0.99 and an average prediction rate of 0.99 for both European and African trios. On simulated data with approximation of coalescence, PHASE implementing the Bayesian method based on the coalescence approximation outperformed other programs on small sample sizes. When the sample size increased, other programs performed as well as PHASE. PL-EM and HPlus implementing empirical methods required much less running time than the programs implementing the Bayesian methods. They required only one hundredth or thousandth of the running time required by PHASE, particularly when analyzing large sample sizes and large umber of SNPs. CONCLUSION: For large sample sizes (hundreds or more), which most association studies require, the two empirical methods might be used since they infer the haplotypes as accurately as any Bayesian methods and can be incorporated easily into downstream haplotype-based analyses such as haplotype-association analyses

    Consequences of the Expanding Global Distribution of Aedes albopictus for Dengue Virus Transmission

    The dramatic global expansion of Aedes albopictus in the last three decades has increased public health concern because it is a potential vector of numerous arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses), including the most prevalent arboviral pathogen of humans, dengue virus (DENV). Ae. aegypti is considered the primary DENV vector and has repeatedly been incriminated as a driving force in dengue's worldwide emergence. What remains unresolved is the extent to which Ae. albopictus contributes to DENV transmission and whether an improved understanding of its vector status would enhance dengue surveillance and prevention. To assess the relative public health importance of Ae. albopictus for dengue, we carried out two complementary analyses. We reviewed its role in past dengue epidemics and compared its DENV vector competence with that of Ae. aegypti. Observations from “natural experiments” indicate that, despite seemingly favorable conditions, places where Ae. albopictus predominates over Ae. aegypti have never experienced a typical explosive dengue epidemic with severe cases of the disease. Results from a meta-analysis of experimental laboratory studies reveal that although Ae. albopictus is overall more susceptible to DENV midgut infection, rates of virus dissemination from the midgut to other tissues are significantly lower in Ae. albopictus than in Ae. aegypti. For both indices of vector competence, a few generations of mosquito colonization appear to result in a relative increase of Ae. albopictus susceptibility, which may have been a confounding factor in the literature. Our results lead to the conclusion that Ae. albopictus plays a relatively minor role compared to Ae. aegypti in DENV transmission, at least in part due to differences in host preferences and reduced vector competence. Recent examples of rapid arboviral adaptation to alternative mosquito vectors, however, call for cautious extrapolation of our conclusion. Vector status is a dynamic process that in the future could change in epidemiologically important ways

    Home Telehealth Uptake and Continued Use Among Heart Failure and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Patients: a Systematic Review

    Background Home telehealth has the potential to benefit heart failure (HF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients, however large-scale deployment is yet to be achieved. Purpose The aim of this review was to assess levels of uptake of home telehealth by patients with HF and COPD and the factors that determine whether patients do or do not accept and continue to use telehealth. Methods This research performs a narrative synthesis of the results from included studies. Results Thirty-seven studies met the inclusion criteria. Studies that reported rates of refusal and/or withdrawal found that almost one third of patients who were offered telehealth refused and one fifth of participants who did accept later abandoned telehealth. Seven barriers to, and nine facilitators of, home telehealth use were identified. Conclusions Research reports need to provide more details regarding telehealth refusal and abandonment, in order to understand the reasons why patients decide not to use telehealth
